North Country Reform Temple Ner Tamid strives to provide Long Island’s North Shore with a center for Reform Jewish Values. Welcoming Diversity

People of all backgrounds will find a home in our congregation. Some of our members come from traditionally observant homes, while others have led a more secular lifestyle. Many of our most active members are Jews by choice, and we welcome the participation of parents and partners who continue in their own faith as they raise a family in ours. Those who have felt cut off from religious life for a variety of reasons have found a spiritual home at NCRT.

Rabbi Liss

Rabbi Dr. Janet B. Liss, is a spiritual leader who involves herself in every aspect of Temple life, including worship, personal counseling, life cycle observances, and study programs. Rabbi Liss teaches our Confirmation Class and our Post Confirmation Class and many different adult education programs.  She is also the director of our Hebrew School program.

Rabbi Liss joined our Congregation in 1996 after having served as the associate Rabbi at Temple Kol Ami in Plantation, Florida. She was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1988. Rabbi Liss has a BA in Jewish Studies from American University, an MA in Hebrew Literature from Columbia University where she completed doctoral coursework in Hebrew Language and Literature and a Doctorate of Ministry from Hebrew union College- Jewish Institute of Religion.

Rabbi Liss plays an active role in local and national Jewish and interfaith organizations.  She is president of the North Shore Clergy Group.  She is on the  Community Advisory Board of  North Shore- LIJ Hospital-in Glen Cove, the Community Advisory Board for the BioGene Bank Research Project at the North Shore LIJ Health System and she is currently a Human Rights Commissioner for Nassau County.  Rabbi Liss is active in the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Women’s Rabbinic Network. She is a member of the Long Island Temple Educators organization.

Student Cantor Alex Kurland 

cantoralexStudent Cantor Alexandra Kurland is from Highland Park, Illinois. She graduated in 2011 from Wellesley College with a BA in Music and Italian Studies. Alex worked in the world of arts administration at institutions such as Ravinia Festival, The Kennedy Center, and New Music School. Alex grew up at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, Illinois, and is grateful to have worked with her mentors there in her role as Cantorial Intern in preparation for her studies at as part of the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion.
